Adventures in Funemployment

Hi all! Social networking has taken off and for a while, I've wanted to start blogging however, working 70-hour work weeks (spent mostly in front of a computer no less), doesn't leave much desire to come home and do the same at the end of a long day...well, thankfully, I've recently been granted a "blessing in disguise" and decided that there is no better time than the present to launch my blogger career (over ambitious much?!?!)!!

Anyway, here's a quick synopsis of who I am and why I'm writing this blog...I'm a 30 year old (arrhh, already?!?!) professional living in NYC. I moved here in 2002 after graduating from college with a degree in Public Relations and Journalism, the innocence of a small town girl and the dreams of making it in the Big Apple. Long story short, I ended up getting a job with Enterprise Rent-A-Car (insert college loser laugh here please) after being threatened by my private investor (aka my dad) to find a job or move home. My career in sales took off, I got promoted, kicked tooshie in B2B sales and after 5 years at Enterprise, got recruited to work for one of the largest recruiting firms in the world. Great timing on my part since 2 years ago was the beginning of the end in the finance world - which I happen to recruit for. awesome.

As a recruiter, my primary job is to play career matchmaker. I love what I do for a living. I love the people I meet, the relationships I build, the fact that I'm helping people find new careers, etc. I loved most things about it, except for one thing...we're in a recession and no one's hiring. So long story short, after god knows how many rounds of layoffs, my number finally came up and I find myself on the labor.gov website filing for unemployment. Rather than sit around and pout, I've decided to embrace this time of "funemployment" (yes, I hear that's the newly coined phrase for 1o% of Americans right now...personal note: I'm loving the positive feel people have turned unemployment into...) to really figure out what I want to do with my life.

And that's where this blog begins...it'll be here that I'll document the highs and lows that come with being funemployed...I'd like to blog daily, but that may get a little boring so I'll check in every so often to update my rambles. If you're unemployed too, please leave a comment and let me know how you're handling being unemployed and what you're doing to make the best use of your time...looking forward to standing on my soap box and hearing all of your soap box comments as well!!
