It's official. Oxford University just released the Top Word of 2009. Drum roll please....the top word of 2009 is: Unfriend. Yes, you non-facebook addicts out there, unfriend is a word and it dominates.
Don't want your ex to see that Halloween picture of you and your new boy toy dressed as a pimp and ho? Unfriend his ass. Recently found yourself funemployed and hate your past boss? Unfriend him and all of his corporate crap. Received a friend request of your arch enemy in college and though you don't like her, you're curious to see how successful (or unsuccessful) she is now but don't want her to see your success or lack there of? accept her request, browse her profile and unfriend her bitchy behind before she logs back on. You get the picture.
In an era saturated with social media and social networking, it's amazing how many "friends" one finds on the internet. Me personally, I have 324 Facebook friends. 300 of which I didn't know I knew (I mean really, can you name 300 people off the top of your head?!?!) I've had many conversations (and a few heated arguments) about adding and deleting "friends" from facebook, myspace, linkedin, etc. and it got me thinking about what would constitute unfriending someone. In honor of the Top Word of 2009, I've come up with 5 instances where the "Unfriend" button would come quite handy...
1) Your parents joined Facebook and you accepted their request because you had no choice. Tell them FB is overrated and unfriend them before they learn how to view your photo albums.
2) You broke up with the old mr. right and have already moved on to mr. right now. before you click that "in a relationship with" button, don't forget to click "unfriend" on your ex first.
3) Your Facebook "friend" posted pictures of last nights party. There you are with your dress over your head and beer gut hanging out, while dancing on the bar. Really, why is she still your friend?
4) Because that bitch who beat you out for Homecoming Queen has more Facebook friends than you do. Unfriend her and make her count go down.
and my favorite...
5) Anyone who is a Facebook Application whore and constantly sends you invites and requests to help them kill the mafia, steal some strawberries, join their FB drinking club and become a member of their FB sorority finds their way up to the top of my Unfriend-ing list. The only drinking sorority I'm joining is the one down the block from my house. Where the bitches are real and the vodka is strong.
Well there you have it. What's your reason to unfriend someone? Let me know in the comment section below and please excuse me while I browse through my friends list and become trigger happy with the "unfriend" button....

So far, so good...
It's been a minute since I posted my last (and first, for that matter) blog that I'm well overdue for an update...
So it's been almost a month that I've been funemployed (geez, where does the time go?!?!). I've actually got quite a lot done and have learned quite a lot about myself in such a little amount of time. Of course, for those of you who know me, I can't possibly go a month without working and NOT travel somewhere. That was the first thing I did once confirming that I would be fortunate enough to receive unemployment (thank goodness I'm not in California receiving IOU's from uncle sam....I wonder if I could send him one in April?...huh, now there's a thought) Anyway, I booked a trip out west to visit my sister in Portland, OR and boy, let me tell you - it's nice to get out of NYC for a week! Between the fresh air, polite drivers, cheap drinks and NO SALES TAX, one would wonder why I ventured back to NYC. My dad flew in from Hawaii for the weekend and we took a drive down to the Oregon coast for some 3-card poker (gotta love reservation casinos! although this one didn't allow drinking on the casino floor....odd, don't you think?), fresh crab and drunken sea lions (see pic below). good times! Here's a couple of pics from my trip:
Aside from traveling, I've also really gotten my creative juices flowing. I've come up with a name for my babycakes side business ("Sweetcheeks and Fireflies") - which you'll see in a post by itself, and have started marketing it pretty heavily. Got my first order last week (thanks tash!) and have a couple more in the pipeline! I also started designing jewelry (mostly because I stumbled upon a great jewelry supply store while ribbon shopping one day and decided that I'd give it a shot) - however, that's not working out as easy as I expected it to be so we may have to abort this mission soon....I've even helped a couple of previous clients with searches for great candidates with success, no less!
With everything going on, I've still made a conscience effort to really think about my future and which direction I want it to go in. I've read a couple of books on careers (best book I've read so far is called "I See Your Dream Job" by Sue Frederick. Fantastic book - I highly recommend reading it!), thought about my 5, 10, 15 year goals and so forth. I've decided that no matter what I do in the future, it has to involve some type of creativity, working with people, and the ability to allow me to utilize my neurotic organizational skills (any post-it note & color highlighter fans out there?!?!). Do jobs like this exist out there? If you have a job like this, drop me a comment and let me know what you do for a living!
Anyway, until next time, take care!

Adventures in Funemployment
Hi all! Social networking has taken off and for a while, I've wanted to start blogging however, working 70-hour work weeks (spent mostly in front of a computer no less), doesn't leave much desire to come home and do the same at the end of a long day...well, thankfully, I've recently been granted a "blessing in disguise" and decided that there is no better time than the present to launch my blogger career (over ambitious much?!?!)!!
Anyway, here's a quick synopsis of who I am and why I'm writing this blog...I'm a 30 year old (arrhh, already?!?!) professional living in NYC. I moved here in 2002 after graduating from college with a degree in Public Relations and Journalism, the innocence of a small town girl and the dreams of making it in the Big Apple. Long story short, I ended up getting a job with Enterprise Rent-A-Car (insert college loser laugh here please) after being threatened by my private investor (aka my dad) to find a job or move home. My career in sales took off, I got promoted, kicked tooshie in B2B sales and after 5 years at Enterprise, got recruited to work for one of the largest recruiting firms in the world. Great timing on my part since 2 years ago was the beginning of the end in the finance world - which I happen to recruit for. awesome.
As a recruiter, my primary job is to play career matchmaker. I love what I do for a living. I love the people I meet, the relationships I build, the fact that I'm helping people find new careers, etc. I loved most things about it, except for one thing...we're in a recession and no one's hiring. So long story short, after god knows how many rounds of layoffs, my number finally came up and I find myself on the labor.gov website filing for unemployment. Rather than sit around and pout, I've decided to embrace this time of "funemployment" (yes, I hear that's the newly coined phrase for 1o% of Americans right now...personal note: I'm loving the positive feel people have turned unemployment into...) to really figure out what I want to do with my life.
And that's where this blog begins...it'll be here that I'll document the highs and lows that come with being funemployed...I'd like to blog daily, but that may get a little boring so I'll check in every so often to update my rambles. If you're unemployed too, please leave a comment and let me know how you're handling being unemployed and what you're doing to make the best use of your time...looking forward to standing on my soap box and hearing all of your soap box comments as well!!
